Michael Tsakountis

Michail Tsakountis is a Greek painter from Heraklion, Crete. He studied painting at the School of Fine Arts in Athens and mixed media painting in Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design in London.

His work has been featured in galleries in the UK, USA and in cities throughout the world.

In his words:

”I’m frequently asked why I predominately paint portraits. The answer is because portraits hold a very special place in the history of art. However, it's not that simple; I‘ve always believed that art should be anthropocentric above all, to exculpate the human passion, to praise love, to tame the wilderness of the animal inside and ultimately to glorify the tragedy of human existence and stand before death.

I couldn’t find a better companion on my long journey through art than the human, his special characteristics and the unique personality within each and every one creates fresh challenges for me. My urge to fully understand, communicate and love the ‘Other’ is the real reason I'm painting human faces.
